Do I need a Carbon Monoxide Monitor for My Diesel Heater?

Do I need a Carbon Monoxide Monitor for My Diesel Heater?

As a rule I say 'no', because the exhaust fumes are always dispersed into the atmosphere and have very little chance of making it back into your caravan.

However here is some info to be aware of in that regard.

Why Carbon Monoxide Is Dangerous

Carbon monoxide is:

  • Invisible
  • Odourless
  • Colourless

You don’t smell it, you don’t see it, and by the time you feel symptoms (headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion), you may already be in danger. High concentrations can cause unconsciousness or death, especially while sleeping.

How Diesel Heaters Can Produce CO

A diesel heater produces carbon monoxide as part of normal combustion.
The danger arises only if exhaust gases enter the living space.

This can happen due to:

  • Exhaust leaks (cracked pipe, loose clamp, poor joints)
  • Incorrect exhaust routing (too close to doors, windows, vents, or under annex floors)
  • Poor combustion (blocked intake, carbon buildup, incorrect fuel delivery)
  • Improper installation (cheap seals, incorrect floor plates, missing gaskets)

A correctly installed heater keeps combustion air and exhaust completely separate from cabin air.

We guarantee to ensure your heater is installed correctly with no chance of exhaust fumes finding their way back to you.

Why Caravans Are Higher Risk Than Vehicles

Caravans are:

  • Smaller, enclosed spaces
  • Often used overnight with people sleeping inside
  • Sometimes sealed tightly against cold weather

Ensure Correct Installation if doing DIY

This is where most CO incidents originate — not from the heater itself, but from how it’s installed.

Critical installation points:

  • Exhaust pipe must be continuous, sealed, and heat-rated
  • All joints must be clamped and secure
  • Exhaust outlet must vent fully outside and away from openings
  • Combustion air intake must draw outside air only
  • Floor penetrations must be properly sealed with metal plates or gaskets

Shortcuts here are what create risk.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms Are Available

Every caravan with a diesel heater may have a CO alarm.

  • Install it at sleeping height
  • Test it regularly
  • Replace it according to manufacturer lifespan (usually 5–10 years)

Bottom Line

Diesel heaters are safe when installed correctly — millions are used worldwide every day.
