Choosing the Right Diesel Heater for Your Caravan
Share
One of the most common questions we get is:
What size diesel heater should I choose for my van?
There’s plenty of debate around this topic, and the truth is — there isn’t a single correct answer. The right choice depends on your van size, layout, insulation, and how you like to camp.
A Simple Rule of Thumb
When speaking with customers, we generally recommend:
- Vans 17ft and under: 2kW diesel heater
- Vans over 17ft: 5kW diesel heater
As a real-world example, we run a 5kW heater in a 21ft caravan, and it’s been the perfect size for our setup.
2kW vs 5kW – What’s the Difference?
2kW heaters
- Smaller physical size
- Easier to fit into tight or unused spaces
- Ideal for smaller caravans, campers and compact layouts
5kW heaters
- Higher heat output
- Better suited to larger vans or colder conditions
- Can be dialled back to suit smaller spaces
In practice, a 2kW heater may need to work harder to heat a larger van, while a 5kW heater can simply be turned down in a smaller one.
The Bottom Line
Whether you choose a 2kW or 5kW heater, the end result is the same — you stay warm and comfortable on cold days and nights.
If you’re unsure which size is best for your setup, we’re always happy to help you choose the right system for your van and camping style.
