Can I DIY My Caravan Diesel Heater Installation?

The short answer is: yes — if you know what you’re doing.

Installing a diesel heater isn’t overly complicated, but it does require basic handyman skills, the right tools, and enough confidence to cut a fairly large hole in your caravan floor.

What to Expect with a DIY Install

Most diesel heaters are supplied as complete kits. While the instructions technically exist, they’re often written in Chinglish and can be more confusing than helpful. If you’re tackling a DIY install, YouTube will likely be your best resource, not the instruction booklet.

Key Questions You Need to Answer First

Before you start drilling or cutting anything, make sure you’ve thought through the basics:

  • Should you be installing a 2kW or 5kW heater?
  • Where will the heater physically fit in your caravan?
  • Can you safely drill a 100mm hole through the floor without hitting chassis members, wiring or plumbing?
  • Where will your fuel tank be mounted?
  • What type of fuel tank best suits your setup?
  • Where are your batteries, and how will you run power to the heater?

There are plenty of other details, but if you can confidently answer these questions, you’re off to a good start.

DIY or Professional Install?

If you’re feeling confident and well-prepared, a DIY install can be very rewarding. But if you’re unsure at any point — especially before cutting the floor — it’s often worth getting help.

If you’re based in Perth and would prefer a professional installation, give us a call. We’re happy to supply, install, or simply help you get it done right the first time.
